HOT WEATHER WARNING
don't leave a child in the car
Never leave your child alone in a car, not even for a minute, and even if you are standing just outside
10 minutes.
That’s how long it takes for the temperature inside a vehicle to rise 20 degrees from the temperature outside. For children in particular, this increase is enough to result in death.
Sunlight shines into a closed vehicle, heats up the interior and then this heat stays trapped by the glass and can’t escape. This occurs even if the windows are partially cracked open.
When the human body reaches temperatures above 40 C the organs are at risk, but children are vulnerable because their bodies heat up three to five times faster than an adult's.
Here are five recommendations:
Never leave your child alone in a car, not even for a minute, and even if you are standing just outside
Keep your car locked when you are not in it, so children don't gain access
Create reminders by putting something in the back seat next to your child, such as a briefcase, purse, mobile phone or your left shoe
Put the car seat on the passenger side of the back seat
If you see a child alone in a car, emergency services immediately
